Murshidabad heats up again over Waqf law, three people die
BSF jawans have been deployed to handle the situation.
Suti, Shamsherganj and Dhulian in Murshidabad, India, have been repeatedly disturbed by protests against the amended Waqf Act. Although the atmosphere was calm since morning, the situation became more complicated after the news of three deaths came to light.
Citing police, news agency ANI reported that three people died in the fiery situation that arose in various places in the region on Friday and Saturday due to protests, attacks and vandalism over the Waqf Act.
News agency PTI reported that the deceased in Jaffrabad were a father and son. It is alleged that their house was attacked on Saturday.
In addition to vandalism, arson, blocking national highways and railways, clashes between protesters and police erupted in Murshidabad on Friday. Although the situation was somewhat controlled from that night to Saturday morning, the picture changed as the day progressed.
Fresh reports of violence continued to emerge from different areas of Dhulian and Suti on Saturday. Police confirmed that one person was shot in Dhulian today.
West Bengal Police Additional Director General (Law and Order) Javed Shamim said that the person who was shot has been taken to the hospital.
Earlier, two people, including a minor, were reported to have been shot in Suti on Friday night.
Meanwhile, BSF has been deployed on the roads to control the situation in the area, which has repeatedly become heated. There is also a tight police guard. But the situation is changing rapidly.
A resident of Suti told BBC Bangla, "Dhulian and Suti have been in flames for the last few days. There is an atmosphere of fear here." The local resident is a senior government employee.
He said, "Police cars, ambulances, buses were vandalized, set on fire. Gold shops, sweet shops, private residences were looted. The police or the administration could not do anything. Later, the BSF force was sent in. But the situation is not good."
It is alleged that looting was also carried out in several shopping malls.
Incidentally, opposition leader Shuvendu Adhikari approached the High Court demanding the deployment of central forces in Murshidabad. After hearing the case in the special bench, the court ordered the deployment of central forces. However, before that, the court had sought the opinion of the state.
