Due to a technical fault, the power supply from the Adani Group's coal-fired power plant built in Godda, Jharkhand state, India, has been completely cut off. The power plant has two units with a capacity of 800 MW.

Production from the first unit stopped on April 8. And the second unit stopped at around 1 am on Friday. This has created a shortage in power supply.

PGCB and PDB sources say that load shedding may increase further tomorrow, Sunday if supply from Adani's power plant does not start. PDB has asked Petrobangla for additional gas supply to meet the shortage.

Three responsible officials of Power Grid PLC Bangladesh (PGCB), the state-owned power transmission company that supplies electricity to the national grid from the power plant, and the Power Development Board confirmed this to Prothom Alo. They said that the power plant was producing a maximum of 1,400 MW. More than 750 MW has been supplied since April 8. Now no more electricity is coming. A unit is scheduled to be commissioned this Saturday evening.

There is a dispute over the price of coal used in Adani's power plant. Discussions are underway between Adani and PDB on this. Adani has also pressed for payment of dues at various times. Adani stopped supplying electricity once last year. After that, they started producing one unit after paying the regular current bills. PDB requested full power supply last February. They have been supplying power to two units since the beginning of March.

PGCB and PDB sources say that since Saturday is a holiday, the demand for electricity is slightly lower than other days. The highest demand has reached 13,500 MW as of 1 pm today. At this time, 300 MW of load shedding has been done. If supply from Adani's power plant does not start, load shedding may increase further tomorrow. PDB has asked Petrobangla for additional gas supply to meet the shortage.

PDB member (generation) Md. Zahurul Islam told Prothom Alo that Adani is trying to repair the power plant's faults. Efforts are being made to quickly restart the shut-down unit first. Additional production is being done from oil-fired power plants to meet the shortage. A request has been made to increase gas supply. If fuel supply is available, production can be done as per demand.

Adani's coal-fired power plant has a capacity of 1,600 MW. There are two units of 800 MW capacity in this plant. Bangladesh will buy the electricity generated from it for 25 years. Commercial electricity production from the first unit began in April 2023. Commercial production from the second unit began in June of the same year. PDB signed an agreement to buy electricity with Adani in 2017. A committee formed by the interim government is working to review PDB's agreement with Adani.
