 CID seizes Rafiqul's hotel of Rangdhanu Group

        The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police has seized the 'Unique                   Regency' hotel owned by the Rangdhanu Group in Banani, the capital.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police has seized assets worth Tk 33 crore, including a luxury hotel, of Rafiqul Islam, the owner of the Rangdhanu Group, on charges of amassing huge wealth through fraud and forgery and laundering money abroad. The CID headquarters announced this information in a press release on Monday.


The press release said that a money laundering case is being investigated by the CID's Financial Crime Unit against Rafiqul Islam and his associates. The case was filed at Gulshan Police Station on August 7 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

The ID said that Rafiqul Islam had taken a loan of Tk 4 billion from the Baridhara branch of Islami Bank, Tk 2.7 billion from the Bashundhara branch of First Security Islami Bank, and Tk 2 billion from the Gulshan branch of Union Bank in the name of Rangdhanu Builders. He did not repay the huge amount of money borrowed from various banks. Later, he invested the money abroad after obtaining citizenship.

During the investigation, the CID learned that Rafiqul Islam had a nine-story building built on 6 percent 2 chhatak land on Banani Road No. 17 and a hotel worth Tk 338.1 million pledged with Unique Regency and Samabaya Bank Bangladesh Limited. Later, the hotel was seized on the court's order and the money was blocked.


The CID said that the investigation is continuing to fully investigate the case, find the source of the money, find the assets smuggled abroad, and identify and arrest other people involved.
